Uncanny pic: The Land of Mist

This is a striking illustration of the spirit of a man’s mother appearing to him at a seance. It comes from the original Strand Magazine serialisation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s novella ‘The Land of Mist’ from the 1920s. ‘The Land of Mist’ was the most overt attempt at spiritualist propaganda in Doyle’s fiction, and isn’t much of a story (not when compared to The Lost World or the Holmes adventures, anyway), other than quite a scary sequence when the scientific investigators encounter a malevolent spirit in a haunted house.
