Doctor Who believes in ghosts

Interested to learn on tonight’s ‘Doctor Who Confidential’ on the BBC that both the Doctor and Amy believe in ghosts – or rather Matt Smith and Karen Gillan do. The actors were taking time out of filming at Caerphilly Castle in South Wales to chat to a bloke who runs a ghost tour there. Asked whether he believes in ghosts, Smith admitted that he did but added that he ‘believes in anything unearthly’. He later said that starring in Doctor Who had opened him up to believe that ‘anything is possible’. Karen Gillan was more precise about her beliefs, saying that both she and her mum believes in ghosts and that she used to read a lot about the paranormal when she was younger.

I wonder what they would have made of the traditional ghost of Caerphilly Castle? The tour guide mentioned the ‘Green Lady’ but only in the typical modern context of the spirit of a long departed noblewoman, not the half-goblin entity described (in ‘Folk-Lore and Folk Stories of Wales’ by Marie Trevelyan, 1909) as having a small body but an ‘enormously large head’ with ‘mosntrous goggle eyes that glared like great red moons’? The Green Lady was also said to have the power of ‘turning herself into ivy and to mingle with the ivy growing on the wall’s of the castle (‘British Goblins’ by Wirt Sikes, 1880). She sounds even scarier than The Silence (well, maybe not).
