Mysterious monster among the Inner Hebrides

Reading ‘Ring of Bright Water’, Gavin Maxwell’s classic book about life with an otter in the Western Isles of Scotland, I was surprised to find a detailed account of a sea monster sighting just the year before off the coast of Soay, near Skye. It came of a good witness, a friend and former colleague of Maxwell’s who wrote to him the day after the sighting. It was a hefty beast and a weird-looking thing which they saw close to their boat in clear water. If anyone has any idea what it might have been, I’ll be most interested to know.
